The costa blanca

Altea
Without doubt this is one of the most charming towns that Spain has to offer. On Spain's ‘white coast’, this town has managed to retain its character, and only low key development has taken place here. With its medieval cobbled streets, this is a restful resort and although it is only 11 kilometres north of Benidorm, they are worlds apart.

Altea became a bohemian centre for musicians, artists and writers from all over Europe – when Altea was discovered in the 60’s.

Tiny shops selling local crafts are situated amongst the many top class restaurants. There is also a new impressive arts centre and concert hall providing a wealth of entertainment and cultural activities. At the seafront, there are a series of shingle and pebble beaches and it’s on the promenade where the huge Tuesday market is held.

Benidorm
In 1953, Benidorm was a tiny fishing village unheard of in the UK. The local mayor travelled 8 hours on his scooter to Madrid to visit the dictator General Franco. His mission was to lift the ban on bikinis! Once agreed the mayor went home to start building one of the most successful tourist resorts in the world.

Now Benidorm is capable of taking 5 million visitors per year. The distinctive skyscrapers are the towns trademark, yet a 20 minute drive inland can take you into some of the most beautiful mountainous countryside Spain has to offer.

San Juan
San Juan is a small Spanish village nestling in a beautiful green valley between Alicante & Benidorm. Traditionally Spanish & totally unspoilt, Coveta Fuma has safe, sheltered coves that are perfect for children and a sprinkling of bars & restaurants in the village square.

Laid back & peaceful but not remote, in fact the main Coastal Railway linking Alicante in the North to Denia in the South is just a short stroll away. Its a fast, reliable and gloriously cheap service and the views are breathtaking, passing through countless towns & villages, Villajoyosa, Altea, Calpe, etc. You can visit a different village every day, shop at the colourful markets, relax on the endless beaches. The spectacular Theme Park 'Terra Mitica' is also just a short trip away by car or train, so if thrills are your passion, or shopping, just hop on the air conditioned train. In the summer the trains run all night so you can forget the car and truly relax - with a very large glass of Sangria!

Alicante
This thriving cosmopolitan city has three thousand years of history, but at the same time is the leading city for commerce, culture and tourism. Developed as a sea trading centre after many wars and conflicts is what it remains today.

It was the first coastal city to be linked to Madrid, and so became the national capitals main sea port.

Alicante is now the second largest city in Valencia, with a population of more than a quarter of a million.

Although the main part of Alicante is renowned for its city life and night life there is also the 7 kilometres of golden sandy beach to consider. Alongside the beach is the beautiful seafront promenade where excellent shops and restaurants can be found.

Santa Pola
Only ten minutes south from Alicante, Santa Pola offers hundreds of shops to visit. It has one of the largest fish markets in Europe, making a visit to one of the local restaurants a must. While a 20 minute boat trip from the port takes in the picturesque island of Tabarca which provides lovers of the sea a unique marine reserve where many migratory birds pass the winter. The reserve is also the natural habitat of several aquatic species such as albatross and herons. Of special interest are the famous salt pans, (salinas) with over 2500 hectares these are now officially declared a nature reserve home to flamingos and much other bird life.

In the centre of the town are a most impressive castle and fortress built to combat raids by pirates, and within the castle is a museum which specialises about the ocean and archaeology.

Guardemar del Segura
This resort is situated just 21 miles from Alicante and enjoys both woodland and beach environments. The town is perched on a hill and is situated at the mouth of a river with the same name.

Within the town, there is a castle which dates back to times when the port was run by the Greeks. This town is steeped in history and is an ideal place to soak up culture as well as the natural environment and learning more about the plant life and aquatic life.

Boasting a top marina with all services and facilities, this town is also home to a river course designed especially for small boats.

Local restaurants pride themselves on serving top quality seafood and are renowned for their rice dishes, which is in keeping with the perfect healthy lifestyle.

To further enhance the healthy lifestyle, Guardemar has extensive golf courses, as well as two major Sports Centres “Las Rabosas” and “Municipal Sports Centre”.

The beaches at Guardemar are some 17km long and are especially wide making them easily accessible their beautiful soft sandy dunes not only make the views wonderful, but is rich in wildlife too.

Torrevieja
Revolving around sea and salt, Torrevieja was originally a fishing village and has grown into a large attractive tourist resort with two lagoons (The Torrevieja lagoon and La Mata lagoon).

Torrevieja is situated 29 miles from Alicante and enjoys beaches, squares, parks and gardens. With its bustling atmosphere it is easy to soak up the happy environment with one of the largest street markets in Spain whilst in the evening the large port area holds a craft fair.

With Torrevieja being home to two natural salt lakes, it is very beneficial for anybody with health problems to take advantage of the healthy lifestyle, not to mention the lovely year round warm temperatures.

There are many cultural experiences to be found within Torrevieja, The Music Palace, The Municipal Library and The Visitor Centre of the Natural Park of the Lakes are a few of the many attractions Torrevieja has to offer.

Shopping is also extensive with over 2500 establishments dedicated to fashion, furniture, textiles, leather and electronic goods. Most shops open from 10am – 10pm Monday – Saturday.

There are two commercial centres, one is located in the town centre (plaza de Isabell II) and the other (Ozone) is located on the regional road of CV90. The main European food outlets can also be found with many offering a home delivery service.

Campoamor
Situated practically on the beach, this town is the perfect setting for the wide selection of top quality restaurants and bars. Home to the Real Club de Golf this magnificent club house and golf course has been designed with both the amateur and professional golfer in mind. The views from here are spectacular and with the superb facilities that the clubhouse has to offer, this is certainly a very sought after high quality area.

The marina and beach at Campoamor have magnificent Mediterranean views and are located just a five minute drive from the fabulous golf course. More superb facilities are offered nearby including horse riding and other fantastic golf courses situated at nearby Villa Martin and Las Ramblas.

Mil Palmeras (Torre de la Horadada)

Tourism constitutes its main economic activity and it has 4 km of beaches: Playa de las Mil Palmeras, Playa del Río, Playa del Gato, Playa de los Jesuitas-Cala Rincón, Playa del Conde, Playa del Puerto and Playa del Mojón.

La Manga
La Manga Club is a fabulous 1400-acre sporting paradise nestled between the Murcian Hills and the Mediterranean sea in the beautiful region of Murcia, south-eastern Spain.

La Manga Club's landscaped resort offers three of the finest golf courses in Europe, and has hosted 5 Spanish Opens as well as numerous national, charity and corporate golfing events. Cartagena
Cartagena is one of the most important ports in Spain, servicing foreign trade customers all over the world and bringing much wealth and employment into the city.

Cartagena offers historical attractions besides the Port, with beautiful old buildings and fine gardens. The old location of the Doors of San Jose was the main zone from access to the historical city, the door itself was demolished in 1916 along with much of the wall. Now it is being restored and conserved.

The Regatta Club will offer many sports halls, swimming-pool, dining area and a shopping mall. The National Museum of Underwater Archaeology is a wonderful place to visit; the museum walks you through exhibition halls, showing the wealth of the sea, marine history & many treasures found in local waters. These objects of the past were excavated mainly by the National Centre of Submarine Archaeological Investigations. You will also find on display pieces of naval architecture, models & documents dating back hundreds of years.

Murcia
A modern commercial city which has many historical monuments. The cathedral is a favourite and took 4 centuries to complete. Described as one of the most beautiful and historic cities standing on the banks of the river, the impressive city walls give a Moorish influence to the city.

In all, Murcia has everything to offer the visitor and can almost guarantee that no matter when you choose to visit you will be wrapped up in some kind of fiesta or celebration.

San Miguel del Salinas
This typical Spanish village is situated in the southern Costa Blanca. San Miguel del Salinas lies 7km inland and has a thriving agricultural community. San Miguel del Salinas offers a health centre, post office and weekly market.

With its hilly landscape the view over the salt lakes is beautiful. The three golf courses of Compoamor, Villa Martin and Las Ramblas can all be reached within a ten minute drive.

Orihuela
Orihuela is a beautiful ancient inland city and has narrow streets, intriguing shops and small Tapas Bars all of real quality to ensure everybody’s needs are catered for. Dating back to the Moorish period, the city also has an old cathedral. The town has five national monuments and a walk through Orihuela should not be hurried as most of its architecture can be traced back to either gothic or baroque periods.

The beaches of Orihuela are some of the best on the Costa Blanca, each having the European Blue Flag for cleanliness. The beaches are actually closer to Torrevieja than Orihuela but all the same are outstanding.

Elche
Elche is an ancient city and has many historical and cultural buildings. The bust of an Iberic princess is a symbol of the city. Famous throughout Spain, Elche is the main grower of the beautiful palm trees which are exported all around the world.

Near to the town centre there are 12km of beach land where sand dunes combine with pine trees to give a scenic Mediterranean coastline. The inland part of the municipal area offers a very special eco system at the lagoon of El Fondo.

Thirty districts surround the town of which many are rural, and are mainly agricultural growing produce such as pomegranates figs, dates, almonds and cotton.
