How to stay safe whilst travellingWhether you're backpacking or going on a package holiday it really does make sense to prepare a little in advance. As always check your travel insurance covers you for the type of holiday you're going on. Visit our travel insurance pages for more info on the different types of travel insurance. Find out about the customs and culture of the country you're visiting.
In some countries it cancause offence if women wear shorts or bare shoulders
or arms. A photocopy of your passport is useful - you could keep this in your
main luggage away from your real passport. You could also scan it in
and send it to an online email address - one you can check from any computer
(eg: yahoo or hotmail) Have two wallets. One with a small amount of cash in it and the proper one. Obviously keep the second wallet more securely hidden. If you get mugged or attacked you'd be able to hand over the smaller wallet and not lose as much. Don't take this to extremes and end up with 5 wallets though. When going through passport control or immigration sections take off your hat and sunglasses. Dress down. Brand new expensive clothes make you more of a target, especially when wearing a dear watch or a camera bag which makes it obvious what is inside. Don't allow anyone to put anything in your luggage. Do not agree to carry anything through customs for anyone. Stay in touch with people back home. Let them know about your route and any changes you make to it. Stick to sensible guidelines like don't hitchhike alone, don't walk unlit streets at night on your own, avoid unlit areas.
